Carly Muise's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Dear Family & Friends,

What's that saying, something along the lines of "The third time is a charm!"

First and foremost, thank you for navigating your way to my 2009 PMC site.

As you may know, my 2008 PMC ride did not go as planned - I had a rough fall around mile 60 on day 1. It was an extremely tough decision, but I elected not to continue riding for the weekend. After an afternoon at the hospital, I was fortunate enough to get to Bourne to watch and cheer for my good friend Jordan Dargon as she finished her Day 1 ride. I was overwhelmed with emotions as I watched her finish. The competitor in me was defeated, and there was sense of failure. But the atmosphere during the PMC is overflowing with excitement, energy, and enthusiasm. The next morning, I felt mixed emotions as I stood by my Dad and my family as we saw her off for the Day 2 ride towards Provincetown; however the inner winds had changed and by far, the greatest emotion I felt was gratitude as Jordan and the other riders embarked on the last day of the journey.

For me, the true spirit of the weekend has always been about those who battle these horrific diseases. It is truly an awesome experience to stand among 5,000+ riders and countless volunteers while knowing that we have all have the same goal - to help find a cure for cancer. The training, sacrifices, and preparation are minor when compared to the treacherous battle that cancer patients endure.

Having seen first hand my dad's fight over the last 6.5 years and having participated in 2 PMC rides, I can say with conviction that the PMC is more than a bike ride or athletic event. It changes neighborhoods into cheering zones and transforms the roads of MA into bike paths for a cure. It honors survivors and those who have lost the battle. It connects families of patients and creates families of riders. The PMC is more than a bike ride - it is avenue of hope. A hope that one day, cancer will no longer be a term of fear, pain, or anguish.

I am honored and grateful to have an opportunity to participate in my third PMC. I am excited to share the road once again with members of the Bryant Softball community, Jordan Dargon and Coach Lisa. Both have had a profound influence on my life and have been great pillars of support.

This year, I will proudly ride for my dad, but I also be riding for all the family and friends that are currently battling cancer. Their determination and willpower are sources of motivation and encouragement.  And I will keep those who are no longer with us close in my heart - their absence has left a void in our lives, but their memory lives on.

I appreciate you words of encouragement and financial contributions, as I set out to support both Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund through the PMC.

Thank you and God Bless,
Carly Muise and The Muise Family
