Chris Lowenstein's Ride

Why I'm riding 200 miles in two days...again

Childhood Cancer. Two words that should never be spoken together. Unfortunately, far too often, they are. Parents are shocked to hear a doctor tell them that their child has Childhood Cancer. Only a few years ago, survival from many Childhood Cancers was highly unlikely.  Personally, I lost two of my college fraternity brothers to cancers in their early 20's. Not childhood, but still far too young. Currently, major advances in research and treatments have increased survival rates significantly over the past 40 years, from less than 10% to more than 78%. But yet, that is NOT enough.

On August 7th and 8th of this year, more than 5000 dedicated bicyclists will ride up to 200 miles across the state of Massachusetts in the largest single fund-raising event in North America, the Pan-Mass Challenge, or PMC. Combined, they will raise 31 million dollars towards cancer research. In the past 30 years, the PMC has contributed an incredible $270 MILLION dollars to The Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA.

I am privileged to ride with an incredibly well-organized PMC team, known as TeamBrent. We ride in support of this amazing seven year old cancer survivor named Brent, pictured here in my profile.

Brent was only three years old in 2005 and was in chemotherapy, fighting for his life against Stage IV neuroblastoma.  This picture was taken in June 2009 at a PMC fundraiser in his honor, Brentapalooza. As you can see, thanks to treatment at Dana Farber backed by funding from the Pan-Mass Challenge, he is now a happy active boy.

TeamBrent’s dollars raised from PMC are specifically directed towards fighting neuroblastoma. TeamBrent has funded the construction of a dedicated MIBG room at Dana Farber.  MIBG is an advanced radio-isotope scanning procedure that can be both a test and a targeted therapy treatment for neuroblastoma.

TeamBrentWheels (the cycling subset of TeamBrent) is a group of 50 riders (at last count), including cancer survivors who are among the strongest in the group. And each of us has personally committed to raising $4200 (and on average, we raised nearly DOUBLE that last year, $377,653 in total). That's where you come in. Please consider making a donation, even in the smallest amount.  We have a huge goal to reach, and every little bit helps. As in the past three years, an unprecedented 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes to the Jimmy Fund.

And again, many gracious thanks to all who contributed last year. Let’s eliminate Childhood Cancer this decade.

Thank you so much. I am really looking forward to my second PMC ride. I now know why the rider-retention is so high.
