Catherine Gallivan's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Most weekday mornings I walk by Children's Hospital in Longwood to catch my bus, my thoughts focused on the day ahead -- emails I need to send when I get to work, meetings to prepare for -- and float past the main entrance as though I hadn't spent three years in and out of those doors. Back then the hospital was much smaller, without the overhead walkways and interconnected buildings, and with only half the sidewalk hustle and a quarter of the bus stop bustle. Inside those doors, I received the best care imaginable: skillful treatments, honesty, and support.

My last visit as a patient was in 1975 where I was engaged in a battery of tests, answered scores of questions, and met friendly doctors and nurses who remembered treating me as a baby. As a scared six-year-old, I did not have the wherewithal to say "thank you" to all those nice people for saving my life. The PMC has given me that opportunity to say thank you in the best way imaginable for me -- on my bicycle.

On the left is a photo of my good friend Stephen Gore and me, taken at last year's PMC (for a great hair-raising tale, check out Stephen's profile). This year we will be joined by my dear friend (and Stephen's wife) Robin. You can donate online at pmc.org (look under profiles, where you will see my name and donation code: CG0105), or if you prefer you can donate by sending a check made out to the PMC to me, and I will forward it to the PMC where it will be credited to my account. I hope that you will support my ride for all the people who are fighting cancer right now; for all the people we have loved who died of cancer; and for those of us who are survivors.

Thank you so much for your support. I hope that this is the year a cure is discovered, and that next year I'll just take a fun spin around the block!
