Chip Bergh's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Thanks for visiting my fundraising website for the Pan Mass Challenge. This was my fifth year riding in the PMC, and I am "hooked" on it. It's a 192 mile two-day ride from Sturbridge, Massachusetts to the tip of Cape Cod (Provincetown). I again rode on the first weekend in August with a group of friends and riding buddies, including my college roomate, Josh, and my good riding buddies from the Sharon area.

Part of what makes the entire weekend so inspiring, though, is the opportunity to raise a significant amount of money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) -- one of the world's leading research centers working on a cure for cancer. Not only are they a research facility, but they care for cancer patients, and the work that they do is heart-wrenching.  Over the last four years I have proudly raised over $50,000 for the Jimmy Fund for Dana Farber; and my goal this year is ro raise another $15,000.

With both of my parents, and all of my grandparents dying from cancer, plus a countless number of friends whose lives have been impacted by cancer, I'm highly motivated to raise as much money as I can for this great cause. Every year, now, the PMC organization donates 100% of the money raised for the ride directly to the DFCI. And in fact, the money from the PMC -- the goal this year is $31 Million -- represents fully half of the DFCI's annual operating budget. Net, without the generosity of the riders and the people who support them financially, DFCI would not be what it is today.

So, it is with that as a backdrop that I ask you to please donate generously. Given the economy, the PMC is expecting this year to be a very difficult fundraising year.  And, I know that many of you are thinking hard about the charitable giving you do -- and I respect that.  I know that many of you also support me when I run for the Mass General Pediatric Cancer Ward in the Boston Marathon every spring -- and so for some of you I am hitting you up twice. Just know that I do not benefit one bit ... I do this to raise money for a great cause, and always have my own "skin in the game" for every one of these events. Over the last three years, between the two (PMC and the Boston Marathon) I have raised over $75,000 for these great causes. That gives meaning to my ride/run and makes me feel good about what I'm doing.

So, please give generously, as it is for a great cause!!  Donating is simple and you can easily do it online with a credit card.  Why not do it right now?

All fundraising must be completed by the end of September, so please take the time, for a great cause and be as generous as you can.  Thank you so much!!
