Bill Martin's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Hello to all our family, friends, colleagues and contributors! I'd like to take the opportunity to introduce you to TEAM VANDERBILT and what we're all about. Team Vanderbilt is a 13 person bicycling team that is taking part in this year's Pan Massachusetts Challenge (PMC) on August 1st and 2nd The PMC is New England's oldest and the nation's most successful athletic fundraising event. Riders and their sponsors have contributed over $235 million to The Jimmy Fund of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute since the PMC was established in 1980. An estimated 4,000 bikers will be participating in this year's 30th Anniversary PMC with a goal of raising $30 million to fund the amazing work that takes place every day at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. We hope to contribute $75,000 towards that goal. This is our eigth year of riding in the PMC and have grown from our original team of 8 to the current team of 13. Our first seven years were tremendous experiences and we're looking forward to building upon the enthusiasm and success of last year's effort.

Team Vanderbilt's common connection point is a gym in Norwood where many of us take spinning classes (The Vanderbilt Club, hence our name). We are scattered throughout the metro Boston area from Foxboro to Norwell to Hingham to Billerica and are from all walks of life.
I originally became involved in the PMC because I had seen the absolute indiscriminant way in which cancer devastates our lives. Young or old; male or female; fit or not... cancer affects all of us. I had lost close friends and colleagues to cancer but fortunately had not seen cancer strike close to home. That all changed on May 17, 2002 when I learned that my father had been diagnosed with advanced stage prostate cancer. The reasons for my involvement have since become much more personal.  My father passed away in April of 2007 and I now ride in his memory
