Bernard Gitlin's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Summer is fast approaching and so is this year's Pan Mass Challenge (PMC). This year will be the 32nd anniversary of the PMC-the largest fund-raising event for Dana Farber Cancer Institute. I will be participating for the tenth year as a member of Team Perry.

As most of you know, my daughter Melissa’s first husband Perry passed away in 1999 after a short battle with cancer of the small bowel.  It is hard to believe that it was 10 years ago, July 4th weekend that we first learned of Perry’s diagnosis.  When we heard the news, we new it would be a hard road but Perry was a fighter and we had every reason to believe he would beat it.  Four months later, he was gone.  It is still unthinkable that Perry, a marathon runner and tri-athlete, lost his life at the age of 32.

Since 2001, Team Perry has raised $3 million dollars.  It is mind boggling how much we have accomplished in such a short period of time!  The Perry S. Levy Fund for Gastrointestinal Cancer Research at Dana Farber (established shortly after Perry’s death), provides for the annual salary of a gifted medical research doctor whose contributions will help find a cure. The PSL Fund recipient this year is Dr. Nadine Jackson McCleary.  She received her MD and Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins and she is our clinical fellow at Dana-Farber.

We are very proud of our first three recipients, Dr. Jennifer Chan, Dr. Brian Wolpin and Dr. Rizwan Hag, all of whom have received appointments to the Harvard Medical School faculty and are medical oncologists at the Dana-Farber Institute.  Enclosed are brief summaries of their research to date • our dollars are producing real results.  We are getting closer to both prevention and the cure.  These young “kids” will be the ones to cure Cancer.

In 2009, 60 team members raised over $400,000 allowing Team Perry to reach its 3 Million Dollar milestone. Unfortunately our endowment has taken the same kind of a hit as my 401k. We must replenish the funds now, and can’t wait for the stock market. In 2011 the Team is challenging itself to again raise $450,000 - we know it won't be easy but cancer knows NO recession!

Members of our team will ride anywhere from 90 to 180 miles through Massachusetts and for all of the sweat and glory we are asking for your support.  Your donation is tax-deductible and any amount will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Buddy/Bernie
