Bettina Frederiksen Binkowitz's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Dear Friends,

This will be my third year participating in the PMC.  I started in 2010 as a volunteer together with my husband.  Last year was my first time riding 192 miles from Sturbridge to Provincetown with Team Kermit while my husband volunteered both days with our cousin Sarah. And proud to say that this year we will both ride with Team Kermit.

What an all inspiring experience it was to ride 2 days with this team.  It was a very emotional weekend, one moment I felt the tears down my face when I passed bystanders holding up signs reading;  "Thanks for riding, my kid is alive because of you" & the next moment I smiled when the kids recognized Kermit on our helmets & cheered us on. While riding I had time to reflect on life & what is really the meaning of it all;  find your purpose & make a decision to make a difference in somebody's life.  I will continue to do my part to help eradicate the world of cancer.

I first learned about the PMC because my husband’s dear cousins Ellen & Steven lost their 23 year old son Jared to cancer. They along with their son Adam have been riding in Jared's memory and created Team Kermit. This was Jared's favorite character as a kid.  Team Kermit has now grown to over 50 participants all riding to make a difference and share the experience with each other. How incredible is that?

As I am writing this I am suddenly taken aback from the realization of how this disease has hurt so many people that I love. A dear friend of mine is at this moment fighting back. What really drove home my emotions was the reality that I too am a victim of this terrible disease. My sister and I lost our mom at the age of 43 to cancer. I was 16 and my sister was 9. Our life was forever changed. It is in memory of my mom and Jared as well as in honor of my friend Jeff that I decided to join the Team Kermit and be part of this amazing family of special people.

This year I'm back in the saddle again August 4th & 5th & committed to ride 192 miles & with your help I will realize my goal to raise $20,000 for Dana Farber Cancer Institute and support the efforts of my friend Jeff and all those who are fighting this monster as well as the memories of my mom, Jared and all the people who have had their lives taken away from them by this hideous home wrecker known as cancer.

With sincere gratitude for the ability to participate,

Bettina

PS: 100% of rider-raised revenue goes directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s tireless commitment to finding a cure.

One in four of us will face our own challenges with the disease during the course of our lives. The PMC is a way for the healthy to fight for the ill, and for all of us to invest in the future cure.
