Andrew Stanley's Ride

Why I Ride ...

I have been training for this year's PMC, a 192-mile ride through the hills of Central and Eastern Massachusetts and down the historic roads of Cape Cod, for a few months now. Every morning, I toil down another backroad in rural Virginia, getting my body focused and my mind prepared for two days of riding in the hot midsummer sun that always seems to greet the PMC riders that first weekend of August. I think of the ride down Cherry Street, the street in Wrentham, MA lined with survivors and their families holding emotional "Thank You" signs and the empty chairs signifying those who have lost their battle with cancer. I think of the "Pedal Partners", the children battling cancer who befriend certain PMC riders and inspire and follow their training. They line the entrance to Rehoboth High School as we ride in for lunch on Day 1, smiling and waving, happy to have a day free of chemotherapy and instead enjoying the summer sun with a bunch of smelly, tired cyclists. These thoughts always drive me to kick in another gear and pedal harder, knowing that the harder I work for the PMC, the closer we can get to a cure.
