This will be my 10th year riding with the Ropes & Gray PMC team.

In the past, I rode the PMC and supported Dana Farber because I thought everyone should choose a cause to support, and this seemed like a good one.  This year, I'm riding for a more personal reason.  My teenage son was diagnosed with lymphoma this winter and is now a Dana Farber patient.

I expected Dana Farber to be at the cutting edge, and it is.  Dana Farber is involved in some of the most significant breakthroughs in cancer research and care and is often able to make new treatment methods available to its patients months or years before they become generally available.  During one of my son's hospitalizations this spring, he had a roommate who had come to Dana Farber and Boston's Children's Hospital because conventional treatments had failed to stop his cancer from spreading and an experimental treatment available here offered the hope of saving his life.

I was surprised to learn about Dana Farber's efforts to meet its patients' nonmedical needs.  Every institution has a culture, and Dana Farber's culture is built around the goal of treating the "whole patient" in a warm and caring environment as he or she goes through what is likely to be the most difficult phase of his or her life.  This is an expensive way to treat cancer patients and is often not fully reimbursed by health insurance, so your support is critical.
