Angus Mcquilken's Ride

Why I Ride ...

I’m riding in the PMC for the third time this year because Cancer can impact anyone -- even me.  On May 16, 2008, at age 38, I was diagnosed with colon cancer.  It is highly unusual to have colon cancer at such a young age, but I am actually one of the lucky ones -- my cancer was detected early, at stage two, before it had spread to other parts of my body.  I needed surgery, but thankfully I did not need chemotherapy.

Today I am a cancer survivor, 100% healthy thanks to my terrific family and some great doctors who helped me get well again.  It wasn’t courage or determination that got me through, though I’d like to believe I demonstrated plenty of both, it was in fact medical science that brought me from cancer patient to cancer survivor.  That’s why I work at the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, helping to bring scientific research, including cancer research, from the “research bench to the bedside.”  It’s also why I’m riding for the third year in the PMC, where every dollar raised by riders goes to the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where I am receiving excellent care.  The PMC has raised more than $300 million since it's founding in 1980, and will seek to raise $34 million this year.  The PMC is leading the way in funding the fight against cancer, and I'm proud to be a part of it.  I hope you will want to be a part of it too by sponsoring my ride.
This year I will ride in memory of five friends (and loved ones of friends) whose lives were lost to cancer over this past year:

-          Joe Alden, a great young Democratic activist.  Joe died from oral cancer at age 35 on June 28th, 2010.

-          John Henning, a veteran political reporter for Channel 4, who died from leukemia in July, 2010.

-          Kevin McNicholas, the dean of State House radio reporters, who died from bladder cancer on Thanksgiving Day at age 61.

-          Bruce Swerling, father of my friend and high school classmate Dayle Swerling, who died from Prostate Cancer on March 2, 2011; and

-          Sandra Pressley, mother of Victoria and I’s good friend Ayanna Pressley.  Sandra died from complications of Leukemia on July 1.

Last year I rode 192 miles from Sturbridge to Provincetown, and even added a few miles going to and from my hotel, bringing me past the 200 mile mark!  I've been training all year so I will be able to do it again in 2011.  The ride is coming up on August 6th and 7th.  Join me as a sponsor, and we’ll go on this journey together!
