Adam Liebhoff's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Dear Friends, Family and Colleagues,

On August 6th & 7th, 2011 I'll be participating in my second Pan Mass Challenge, a bike-a-thon to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  When I finished the one-day ride last year, I recall thinking that I didn't want it to end.  So this year I've decided to ride both Saturday and Sunday in a bid to both extend the experience and raise more money for such an incredible cause (the fund-raising commitment is 40% higher for the two day).  Updating the numbers for a very successful 2010 campaign, which of course couldn't have happened without the generosity of people like you, the PMC has raised roughly $300 million for lifesaving cancer research and treatment, and for the fourth consecutive year in 2010, 100% of the funds raised by the PMC were donated to Dana-Farber.

I'll again be joining Team Perry, a group of passionate riders dedicated to funding the Perry S. Levy Fund for Gastrointestinal Cancer Research.  The Perry S. Levy Fund allows for the direct appointment of a Research Fellow at Dana"Farber.  Over the years, Team Perry has raised almost $3,000,000 to fund this Fellowship!  I urge you to follow the link immediately below, which will take you to a short piece Boston's Channel 5 recently aired profiling our team:

I don't think I know anyone who hasn't been touched one way or another by cancer, so my own experience with it"including the loss of both family and friends"isn't unique.  But that's the motivation.  This disease is so pervasive and so impactful that we can't tolerate the devastation it causes without fighting back.  From my perspective, research and learning is a necessary key to "cracking the code."  Unfortunately a meaningful research effort doesn't come cheaply, and that's where my 163 mile ride from Wellesley to Provincetown and your support come in.  By registering for this year's PMC, I have committed to raising a minimum of $4,200 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and I need your help to surpass that goal!  My personal target is $7,500.

UPDATE #1: In anticipation of the two-day PMC, I've been training more intensely and much earlier compared to last year.  In that vein, I rode my first century (100 miles) on Sunday, from Wakefield, MA, through much of Southern New Hampshire and back.  Between getting lost (which added 8 miles) and riding through a steady rain from mile 60 on, it was quite a challenge!  I'm proud to say I finished in one piece with only a few minor aches and pains.  To date, I've logged more than 1,000 miles and by the time the August PMC rolls around that number will likely triple.

UPDATE #2: Last time I sent an update, I had just completed the 100 mile CRW Spring Century - a relatively flat ride starting in Wakefield, MA and meandering through southern NH and back.  Not long thereafter, I began to have some knee pain, which I largely ignored.  Unfortunately, it never subsided as I'd hoped and I ended up in the doctor's office last Monday, less than a week before my toughest ride of the summer...the Harpoon B2B, which starts at the Boston Harpoon Brewery and ends 148 miles later after ~8,000 feet of climbing at the Windsor, VT Harpoon Brewery.  With modern medicine on my side (cortisone shots apparently work very well for IT Band and quad tendinitis), I completed the near 150 mile ride on Saturday in less than 9 hours.  No doubt, the surprise visit from my wife and kids at the 100-mile rest stop served as great motivation, and because I didn't really "push" given my knee issues, I feel surprisingly good today!

So far this season, I'm nearing 1,700 miles ridden and am feeling confident about the Pan-Mass Challenge (163 miles over two days) with the one caveat that my knee holds up.

I know times continue to be tough, which is why it’s more important than ever to help Dana-Farber continue its amazing work. I ask you to support this wonderful cause by making a tax deductible contribution that feels comfortable to you.  For online giving, please follow this link immediately below.
