This past Sunday, a week before Mother’s Day, North Grafton, Mass. residents Aedan, 10, and Jake, 7, rode for the first time in the PMC Shrewsbury-Grafton Kids Ride. They rode as part of Team Malini, a group of 20 young cyclists who pedal together in honor of Aedan and Jake’s mother, Malini Mayerhauser.

I have had the pleasure of interning with the Pan Mass Challenge organization every Thursday for the past few weeks. During this time, I have heard many of the different stories of riders and volunteers. Looking back on my first ride in 2011, I've come to realize that out of the 5300 people riding in the Pan Mass Challenge that year, I was one of a very small group who had not known someone afflicted with cancer.

The meaning behind the team’s name and fundraising strategy 

Twenty eight years ago, Robert Young, of Collinsville, Conn., was sitting in Sunday mass when his late father, Robert Sr., a local Boy Scout leader, collapsed standing at the altar. Young, now 39, was in fifth grade when tests revealed his father had both lung and testicular cancer. Sixteen years later, after remission and relapse, Robert Sr. was gone.
