PMC riders gathered at the Sturbridge Host Hotel last Friday night filled with excitement, anticipation and maybe some nerves. It was the PMC's annual opening ceremony celebration and this was the biggest yet, with cycling super star Lance Armstrong in the audience. Hundreds of PMC volunteers worked all day – and some all week – to make sure the opening ceremony and Sturbridge start went off without a hitch. Inside the ballroom, seats for more than 1,800 were set to accommodate what was expected to be the biggest crowd ever.

To the delight of riders, volunteers and spectators, Boston Red Sox star slugger David Ortiz made a guest appearance at the Wellesley Start of the Pan-Mass Challenge at Babson College. With a hand-made sign, that read Go Tiffany!, Ortiz was there to cheer on his wife, PMC rider Tiffany Ortiz.

Ever year on PMC weekend, hundreds of children and their families gather at the Lakeville water stop along the PMC route for the annual Pedal Partner Picnic. These children are all young oncology patients at Dana-Farber's Jimmy Fund Clinic. But on this day they are the biggest PMC cheerleaders. Armed with markers, crayons and poster board, the children make signs and banners and cheer on the riders as they come in – having already gone more than 80 miles on route to the day one finish line in Bourne.
