2014 Marks MFS' 16th Year of Support for World Class Athletic Fundraising Event

BOSTON (July 31, 2014) – MFS Investment Management® (MFS®) is proud to once again sponsor the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), a leading bike-a-thon fundraising event, in its goal of raising $40 million for cancer research and patient care for The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and The Jimmy Fund. This year marks the sixteenth consecutive year that MFS has sponsored the PMC.

"Cancer awareness and funding for research are important causes for our employees around the world," said Michael Roberge, MFS president and chief investment officer and 14-time rider in the PMC. "We are especially honored to sponsor and field a team of riders who have committed themselves to training and raising money for this wonderful, world class event."

MFS began sponsoring the PMC in 1999. The firm's combined contribution of sponsorship funds and funds raised by employees is expected to surpass $8 million this year.* On August 2–3, MFS will field a team of 91 riders — its largest ever — many of whom will ride the full, two-day course which stretches 190 miles from Sturbridge to Provincetown. Hundreds of MFS employees, family members and friends have taken part in the PMC as riders or volunteers since 1999, with many returning year after year to participate.

"We believe in employee-driven philanthropy, sponsoring causes that are important to our employees, especially those like the PMC, which encourage direct involvement," added Roberge. "We salute the PMC, as well as the thousands of riders and volunteers who have committed to raising awareness and funds for this truly unique and worthwhile cause."

About the Pan-Mass Challenge

The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is an annual bike-a-thon that today raises more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the world. The PMC was founded in 1980 by Billy Starr, who remains the event’s executive director, an annual cyclist, and a fundraiser. The PMC has since raised $414 million for adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. The event donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to the cause. In 2013, the PMC generated more than 50 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue and was Dana-Farber’s single largest contributor. In 2014, PMC cyclists will ride with the goal of raising $40 million. The PMC has successfully melded support from committed cyclists, volunteers, corporate sponsors and individual contributors. All are essential to the PMC's goal and model: to attain maximum fundraising efficiency while increasing its annual gift. The PMC’s hope and aspiration is to provide Dana-Farber's doctors and researchers with the necessary resources to discover cures for all cancers.
